Sony A1 - The best sensor Sony has made?

Sony has announced a new "pro-level" body - the Sony A1. This camera is one of the most impressively designed cameras ever produced. It features a 50 megapixel sensor, 30 fps burst shooting rate and 8k video recording. I've had the opportunity to shoot with this camera for the last 6 days and while I've not had time to go thru everything, I want to talk about image quality. This is the camera that literally does everything.

Current Sony A1 deals at B\u0026H

This is probably the best sensor Sony has produced to date. The dynamic range and sensitivity are incredible for a high resolution sensor. The processor is extremely impressive with noise handling as well at higher ISO's. So here's an overview of some of my favorite features in this camera so far.

  • Thanks for sharing, From a usability perspective the menu system of the A1 appears to be one of its biggest disappointments where users really shouldn’t be left struggling to find settings without spending an inordinate amount of time in doing so. I know it’s been improved but sadly that’s not saying much where the sub standard menu system appears to have been a secondary consideration to Sony. From what I’ve seen you can’t even scroll through a video using the touchscreen which doesn’t rotate and falls well behind the quality of LCD displays offered by rival manufacturers. As a Nikon d850 owner looking to change systems I would have bought the A1 had it not been for the crappy UI which would leave me pulling my hair out.

  • I just got mine in the mail. Big surprise after the 400mm f/2.8 fiasco. I'm not a video shooter, so my needs perhaps aren't typical. I was blown away several years ago by the A9's stacked sensor and it's been a long wait for Gen II. Having a substantially improved sensor with two powerful processors makes this a configuration that I think will last. I frankly don't need 50 megapixels, but a 33 megapixel square format is sweeeeet. Never had a 'Blad, but I find myself so often these days cropping to 1:1 aspect ratio. I don't think that I am alone in wanting to be able to make ALL mode changes by feel while looking through the EVF. All those fiddly analog dials on the top are an annoyance. Just give me a bunch of programmable buttons and the fewest possible arbitrary restrictions on what can be programmed through buttons. That said, I am glad that Canon is over the long run trying to give Sony some real competition.

I just think that we will have to wait for the new M chip based Apple Mac Pro, would be surprised if the new 16 inch Macbook Pro M1X or the i 10 Razer Book Studio Edition can render and upload the footage of such 3 powerful and codex heavy cameras ?

  • Ted , i need your help ! A few years ago i was looking into quadrant framing and i found (probably in one of your videos) a catalog of the works of a famous film director(or a producer or something). He took photos of events and stuff, but the framing was odd. It looked like 35 mm vertical shot with people in the lower half of the frame and empty space in the upped half. But i forgot the name and now i can't find it. Does it ring a bell ?

  • The Sony A1 is an impressive camera but in my opinon this is a huge PR trick. Frankly speeking who needs 8k video? Who can watch at 8k? Only a minority of people can handle such big files or need 8k video files (because of croping?). Sony showed us whats possible and I think people will buy it even though there is no point in having this camera at all.

  • The CIPA standard is totally laughable. 430 to 530 pictures on one battery charge is just ridiculous. Drain the battery in about 15 seconds using 30 fps taking photos, but do video for more than an hour in 30 fps up to 240 fps...? Sure... it is not even physically possible unless you short circuit the electronics. The battery will probably - as usual - give more like 1500 shots on a charge.

    M LM LPřed 4 měsíci
    • You're right. CIPA standards are VERY conservative estimates. I have never found them to be accurate. On the Sony A1 I shot about 4,000 images with ONE battery the other day.

    • Three years of working with the A6500 APS-C Sony has taught me never go to Sony high end. Nobody has ever been able to get through the entanglement of menu complications and cancellations of other functions with ease. The 18 to 135 lens is a slow dog. f 5.6 . Can you imagine Street photography with f 5.6 There is not a single thing about Sony technospeak cameras that is particularly outstanding. This is probably too much tech for 99% of the population, but if money grew on trees, I would pick it up along with that new 35mm lens since I'm already invested in Sony. Try shooting a metal clad building with a pattern or shingles on a roof. Cameras that pixel bin cannot be used for broadcast. The S Cine tone made your face too magenta and your lips were very red. • Really get tired of the video stuff, but I know today there are so many CSbuildrs and others that want the video for the basement, without them we would have to see new stuff in a magazine!!! OK! What about us photo people? Look I know the skies have been cloudy and it is cold too along with winter naked trees! For most of the people wanting dynamic range are the astro Milky Way photographers (panos with 20 or 24mm but maybe a 50mm) or night captures (city), sunset/rise like in the grand canyon where 5 @ +/- 2ev bracketing is a must because of the blue in the shadows that the eye sees clearly and colors that need to be toned down due to cameras get it wrong in AWB (need the cube thing)! One other thing pixel sensors size 12 or 50 or the 62MP does not matter, has anyone heard of Topaz Denoise AI or Gigapixel AI. Big Pixel amounts are wanted by by those who want to crop in 200% but still have enough pixels to make a wall size photo. Let's get real, people post photos not print and they are small size. I started with the A7S in 2014 and took a MW shot enlarged to 200MP size printed to poster size and looks great, So the A7Siii should be just as great as the A1...... Well there are sensor improvements!
