  • That's great, because most film makers wouldn't record footage for two hours straight. When I recorded a music video or short movie. I record 5 - 10 minutes of footage at a time. Then we combine the footage in post production. That's overkill, when recording a movie or music video. Two hours and fourty-five minutes is good for time lapse videos. That makes this a excellent camera for multiple projects. Even low light recording. 😎👍📸🎥

  • I've heard that 4K/120 generates the most heat. I was recording with my Sony A1 indoors @ 4K/60 and it shut off within 5 minutes with the screen closed. The screen by far is the largest drawback to the A1. At its price, it should've been fully articulating and should've had a mechanism that prevents it from going in all the way to allow for optimal airflow. My main concern is how it will perform in the sun or in a hot and humid environment while recording at 8K/30 or 4K/120.

You say i have to put the Lower Limit in Zebra at 109+, but do i keep using the Standard Range at 41% or 55% depending on the situation like on S-log3? And what about overexposing, do i keep te MM at +1.7 like in S-log3? Thanks so much. Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina!

  • Mate, noticed something interesting about the dual iso for s-cinetone. Forgive me if this was mentioned previously but when going to the upper base iso (2000), you actually have to go past it to 2500 and then back to 2000 for it to clean up. Just dialing it up from the lower values up to 2000, it has the same noise as 1600 but if you go to 2500 and then dial it back, it cleans up. 👍

  • Gerald Hi, Re below - does Sony have a dummy battery that they recommend that will NOT invalidate their warranty? Big fan and was watching your test on the Sony A1. I was planning on getting a dummy battery (if I ever get hold of an A1!), but came across this: facebook.com/692544326/videos/10157987634469327/ In case you can’t open the link, here’s the text: !!Warning!! I posted here a while back about how our brand new Sony A1 failed within hours of use, getting permanently stuck in a boot loop. After more than a week of waiting we finally heard back from Sony, and unfortunately, it’s very bad news. Apparently, they won’t fix it under warranty or possibly even offer an out of warranty repair! The reason, you ask? We were using a dummy battery (Good quality, power regulated by Lanparte) at the time the camera failed. I (foolishly) disclosed this to help with troubleshooting, and according to Sony, this voids the warranty completely since it’s a third-party accessory. Of course, Sony doesn’t sell any official dummy batteries for this camera, and for our application using one is necessary. So, if you want to protect your investment, don’t use any third-party accessories, or at least don’t tell Sony about it. Here is the reply in full from Sony: “Sorry for my delayed response! So after explaining the camera technicians/engineers your incident by using 3rd party accessory they came back with this reply: Sorry for the delayed response. From a quality perspective, we cannot conclude that A1 is problematic, based on the information that the issue occurred using a 3rd party accessory. In that specific case, A1 is more power hungry than other ILCE cameras, which can explain why the dummy battery caused the camera to freeze. Unless the issue occurs with the original battery, we cannot consider any action on this camera. If powering the camera from an external source, it’s recommended that this source outputs 9V/3A via the USB-C terminal. (helpguide.sony.net/.../contents/TP0002911136.html- So we can’t cover the incident you had with the A1 due to usage of 3rd party accessory. Kind Regards” Kindest Ivan Francis Clements

  • Regarding use of USB PD: charging the internal battery(s) will cause some heat to be dissipated within the battery. IF a totally-fully-charged battery is inserted into the camera and the camera is powered from USB-PD, and the USB-PD is able to fully meet the demands of the camera, then theoretically, no heat would be dissipated in the internal battery. Has this been condition been investigated? Also, re USB PD: do the Sony cameras implement PPS option? Did you test using a USB-PD supply that supports PPS? Does the USB PS supply you are using actually have the output capability that is required by the camera? (you mention seeing the internal battery level drop a little bit when running USB-PD; this suggests that the USB-PD system is not meeting the total demand from the camera)

  • Man, the a1 is so tempting. I'm going to be selling some of my old gear and have some savings to put towards new stuff as well. Was almost settled on getting an FX6 and either an a7S III or a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Pro, but now I'm thinking that the a1 might be a better choice. I'd like to have a more camcorder-style body like the FX6, but does the a1 just make purchasing an FX6 mostly worthless? I'd love to have something with build in NDs and XLR inputs for certain applications that come up for me quite a bit.

  • Fine test. It would be very interesting to see if moire and other aliasing is worse with 8K internal / 4K HDMI out, than with 4K int./4K out. The little bit of (extra) blur could be some kind of LPF function in the downscaling algorithm. It's been a few years since I had problems with too little sharpness. Problems with aliasing, even if it does not happen so often, is my biggest fear (really cheap video look) when I am busy and do not have time to check the footage.

  • Hi Gerald, Actually, this shouldn't be called oversampling but sampling. What is important to know about CMOS sensors with bayer pattern is that most of a sensors actually use only a third of a resolution for each color pixel. Each photosite can actually capture only red, green or blue. bur they are mostly always considered as equivalent of a pixel as they are counted as pixels. What this mans is that if you capture with a red filter on, you will actually get 3 times less resolution. Same will happen with blue or green filter. Only blacks and whites will be capturead at 'almost' full resolution. When you are using such sensors, capturing internally at 4K, then downsizing as an output to HD, you are actually outputing an actual HD. A test to do: -Set sensor to capture at 8K, and output at 4k over HDMI. Record this in some loseless format. -Upscale recorded 4k to 8K (with some good upscaler, many upscalers don't work perfectly and instroduce some artifacts). -Make another shot in 8K and record 8K. Then compare upscaled image with original image.

Dude, It’s Sony, they R&D and manufacture the PlayStation, and have for over 20 years. You’re pointing out that the camera doesn’t lock us out of features for using the 8K option, which is good to hear, is what turned the light bulb on for me, bc that’s the type of thinking I’ve come to be accustomed to by preferring Sony on everything for the last 20 years. When you have to figure out how to manage heating with a GPU/CPU config for mass manufacturing, they’re gonna figure it out for their cameras too I’d like to think and think I just saw in your video.... best intro out of all cinema channels.

The powerzoom lens draws power and creates heat if used constantly, like when filming events or conserts, my a7sii overheats with the powerzoom, but it lasts for hours when puting on a manual lens. Theese kinds of tests would be very helpfull to see the results from, when you test overheating senarios. Makes it more realistic for when working with it. :) Let me know your thoughts 🙏

  • Surprises me that you don’t talk about the moire issue with the SonyA7S3. I’ve sent my files to Sony engineering and they admit patterns can cause moire. This is not good. I assume it’s the downsample from the 4240x2832 sensor size to UHD. I just did a studio shoot with a host in a linen shirt with a fine thread pattern. I had my A7S3 as the primary camera with two GH5 cameras as secondary cameras. Both of those cameras exhibited zero moire and the A7S3 had a lot of moire. The A7S3 is not an inexpensive Alexa, folks.
